Different People (Lina Nyberg / Birgitta Flick / James Banner)

Lina Nyberg – voice

Birgitta Flick – tenor saxophone

James Banner – bass

Different People is a trio of three composers and improvisers: vocalist Lina Nyberg, saxophonist Birgitta Flick, and bassist James Banner. Their music draws on original material from all three members, reimagined for the close-knit combination of voice, tenor saxophone, and bass, an instrumentation that prizes transparency, breath, and the space between sounds. Fiction and found texts are woven into the work, giving it a dimension beyond the sonic.

Each member brings a distinctive perspective. Lina Nyberg is one of Sweden’s foremost jazz voices, with a career spanning more than three decades and a compositional practice that moves between chamber music, jazz, and orchestral writing. Birgitta Flick is a Berlin- and Stockholm-based saxophonist and artistic researcher whose work explores the boundary between notation and improvisation across disciplines and genres. James Banner is a Berlin-based bassist and composer whose genre-fluid practice spans electro-acoustic music, chamber music, and free improvisation.

Together as Different People, they fold those individual languages into shared music. The repertoire draws on composed pieces and open improvisation in equal measure, shaped by the texts and the ongoing conversation between three musicians who have found real common ground.
